Meesho bulk catalog upload: how the Excel template works and where it breaks

Illustration generated with AI
Once you have twenty or thirty designs, listing them one by one starts to feel wrong. Meesho offers a bulk upload through an Excel template, and many sellers try it once, hit an error they cannot read, and go back to the single form. Here is how the template is organised and the few places it tends to fail.

What is in the Excel template?
You download a template for your category from the supplier panel, and it differs by category. A kurti template asks for different columns than a mobile accessory one, which is why you should never reuse a file from another category.
Most templates have the same ideas:
- A header row with column names, often with some columns marked as required.
- One row per variation. For clothing that means one row per size and colour, not one row per design.
- Columns for the repeating product details such as brand, GST and HSN.
- Columns for image links, because bulk upload takes links rather than files.
- Sometimes hidden sheets with allowed values for dropdown columns.
Open it, look at the sheet names and read the instructions sheet if there is one. It saves time later.
How do you plan SKUs before touching Excel?
This is the step that decides whether the upload goes smoothly. Decide your SKU pattern first, on paper.
A pattern that works: design number, colour code, size. For example:
| Design | Colour | Size | SKU |
|---|---|---|---|
| 014 | BLK | M | KUR-014-BLK-M |
| 014 | BLK | L | KUR-014-BLK-L |
| 014 | BLK | XL | KUR-014-BLK-XL |
| 014 | WHT | M | KUR-014-WHT-M |
Three colours and four sizes gives twelve rows for one design. Each SKU must be unique across your catalogue. A duplicate SKU is one of the common causes of upload failure.
A worked example: three designs, two colours, three sizes
That is 3 x 2 x 3 = 18 rows. You do not want to type 18 SKUs by hand. In Excel or Google Sheets, build the grid once: list sizes in one column, colours in another, and use a formula to join design, colour and size into the SKU. Copy down. Then paste the SKU column into the template.
The other repeating columns, like brand and GST, take the same value on all 18 rows, so you fill the first row and drag down.
Keep a separate backup copy of the sheet before you paste anything into the template. When the upload fails, you want an untouched source.
What are the five errors that break an upload?
These are the ones to check first. The exact wording of Meesho's errors changes, so match the cause, not the message.
1. Duplicate SKU. Two rows with the same SKU, or a SKU that already exists from an earlier upload.
2. Dropdown values typed differently. If the column expects "Cotton" and you wrote "cotton fabric", the row fails. Copy the allowed value exactly, including spaces and capitals.
3. Broken or private image links. The link must open in a browser without a login. Test a few by pasting them in a private window.
4. Missing required columns. A column marked required but left empty. Filter for blank cells before upload.
5. Edited template structure. Deleting or renaming columns, or changing header text, can make the file unreadable. Only edit the data rows.
How do you hold image links?
Bulk upload needs links, which means the images should be hosted somewhere reachable. How you host them is your decision, but keep the folder organised by design number, so that row 14 points at a design 14 image and not 41. A mismatch between a photo and its row creates a "wrong photo for the product" problem that is hard to spot afterwards.
Should you use bulk upload or the single form?
Bulk upload suits you when many products share the same details and you can prepare the sheet carefully. The single form suits a one-off listing or a category with unusual fields.
If you want to keep using the single form but avoid typing the repeating fields, a saved profile does a similar job. The Meesho Listing Autofill extension fills the Add Product form from a saved profile, so you can test it on a few products before deciding to build a sheet.
A pre-upload checklist
Run through this list before you press upload, on a copy of the file.
- The template is the right one for this category and has not been renamed or restructured.
- Every required column has a value on every row.
- SKUs are unique and follow your pattern.
- Dropdown cells contain the exact allowed value, copied and not retyped.
- Image links open in a private browser window.
- Prices and stock are numbers, with no text or stray symbols.
- Rows for the same design share the same repeated fields.
Upload two or three rows first. If they pass, upload the rest. It is much easier to fix three rows than three hundred.
What to do next
Download the template for your category and read it before you fill anything. Plan the SKU pattern on a small sheet, test with two designs first, and fix whatever errors come back. When two designs upload cleanly, do the rest in one go.
FAQs
Can I use one template for different categories? No. Each category has its own template with its own columns and allowed values. Use the right one each time.
Why was only part of my file accepted? Usually the failed rows have a specific problem such as a duplicate SKU or a bad value. Look at the error report, fix those rows and upload only them again.
Do I still need to check listings after a bulk upload? Yes. Open a few listings on a phone and check the photo, price and variations. A column shift in the sheet can put the wrong value in the wrong field for every row.
